How many times have you hear people say, "It always gets worse before it gets better."
How many times have you said that yourself?
Is that so?
Does it NEED to?
Always?
See, I'm not even sure this is accurate. I think it's more accurate to say that things SEEM to get worse before they get better.
For example, health is the natural state. In order to move from illness to health, you don't infuse more health, you remove illness and disease.
But in the process of doing that, you start to find all the little nooks and crannies where that illness has been tucked away.
Real health is not a fragile thing. It takes a significant series of events to move from health to illness. Eventually those events reach a tipping point and BAM! Illness.
And when you turn the corner and start making different choices- more healthy choices- you start to clean out all of those dusty corners and it SEEMS worse.
But it's not worse. It's just showing you what's already there.
If you've ever cleaned out your closet Marie Condo style and threw all of your clothes in one big heap, it's only when you see that big pile that the full gravity hits you. When those clothes were tucked away, it probably seemed kind of ok. But then you pile them all up and you realize what was there all along.
It seems worse, but it's not really. It's just a fuller view of reality.
This happens also when someone has an epiphany about themselves. Suddenly they see something they've been doing, and there is a moment of relief, often followed by an onslaught of big and small realizations about how this habit has been rippling through their life.
Alcoholics and addicts often have this experience when they first get sober. Only with those fresh eyes do they see the devastation they've wrought on themselves and others.
On a larger scale, you can see this in our world. For many, things seem worse than ever. Global pandemic, conflict, conspiracy, war.
But those things are just revealing what's been there all along. Human greed and violence is nothing new.
And the things showing up are the EXACT things that need to be cleaned up in order to return us to health.
Whether is too much sugar in your diet that's weakening your immune system.
Or the veil of self-delusion telling yourself you're ok when you're anything but.
Or the pain and anxiety of the world laid bare before our eyes on the nightly news.
It's nothing new.
It's been there all along.
It only seems worse because we're dragging it into the sunlight.
And as the saying goes, sunlight is the best disinfectant. The light gives us the opportunity to make a new choice.
Do we want what we've had.
Or do we want something different?
If you want something different, there will be some things to clean up.
So grab your mop and bucket and see what little thing you can clean up today that will restore a little more of your health, happiness and charm.
